An Invitation to Join #ChangeTheNow

In 2018 Georgian College, Canada’s first Ashoka Changemaker College, wanted to know if they could mobilize students from kindergarten to Post Secondary into a movement, effectively building a region of Changemakers. It was from here that #ChangeTheNow began.

Do good to do well

#ChangeTheNow was created on the beliefs that small acts can lead to big change and collaborations can turn into largescale movements. We believe together students’, educators’ and communities’ ideas can spark systems shifts that make will make our communities greener, healthier, safer, stronger and more inclusive!

Will you join us in creating the positive change and contribute to 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals?

    🤔 Reflection question

How might ideation help you develop your active listening skills to brainstorm and reflect on ideas effectively with your team?

    Masira's Answer

Ideation helped us to generate ideas of how we can distribute the food miles game. After generating list of ideas, we had to filter them down to see what would work best for our campaign. This process also accelerated active listening skills as we were able to listen to each other, counter the ideas, discuss various perspectives and narrow down from the wide range of ideas and to focus on what is are the most important things and in all have empathy for team member in the process.

    🤔 Reflection question

How might you explain the value of you having a systems-thinking mindset when attempting to define and understand a complex problem?

    Masira's Answer

Systems thinking mindset is really important to define and understand a complex problem like that of food miles as it helps to take multiple perspectives and recognize how things are interconnected so as to not only see what the problem at the surface is but what is beneath which is the real cause of the problem. As we did empathy mapping we understood who we are solving the problem for so that we could bring relevant change and for that systems thinking is important as we saw the bigger picture of what aspects are there for issue of food miles and also understood what actions can be taken and what would be possible consequences of it.

    🤔 Reflection question

After learning about how to empathize with the people affected by your SDG’s social issue, how you might apply empathy to working with the members on your CTN Innovation Team?

    Lisa Marie's Answer

I think it’s good to consider that everyone you meet has different points of view on every situation. Being able to see and hear other people’s opinion helps one to understand the faults and lapses of the problem; likewise, I get to solve issues more effectively if I empathize with the affected people and address their personal concerns. As part of a CTN Innovation Team, I have learned to comprehend and perceive my teammate’s different perspectives and ideas in a positive way, which I think adds significant value to our decision-making as a team.

What did you personally learn about the process of creating your team canvass?

    Jitin's Answer

The Team canvas is an ideal way to know each other, get to know each other's personal goals and align them with common goals, understanding the team's strengths, weaknesses and expectations. As the first task, it really helped us to identify individual interests, roles and responsibilities. collectively we could bring the change.

    Jitin's Answer

Mobius Strip activity helped me understand ME=WE and how collectively we can create a bigger impact towards any cause. It was great learning about understanding my skills and making an impact towards community issues. Although I have been part of some volunteering groups helping the community overcome hunger and educational problems this activity opened a different frame of looking at community problems. I is WE

    Masira's Answer

It is critical to understand and empathize with the people whose problem we are trying to solve. To see the issue from their perspective and knowing what they are feeling, thinking, seeing and how the problem impact them is very important to bring solutions that would directly address the main issue. Empathy would help appreciate others perspectives in the team and would help us collaborate better.

The concept of "ME IS WE" is centered around co-creation and co-evolution, emphasizing the idea that individuals can collectively work together to improve existing systems and strive for collective well-being and sustainable growth.
