An Invitation to Join #ChangeTheNow

In 2018 Georgian College, Canada’s first Ashoka Changemaker College, wanted to know if they could mobilize students from kindergarten to Post Secondary into a movement, effectively building a region of Changemakers. It was from here that #ChangeTheNow began.

Do good to do well

#ChangeTheNow was created on the beliefs that small acts can lead to big change and collaborations can turn into largescale movements. We believe together students’, educators’ and communities’ ideas can spark systems shifts that make will make our communities greener, healthier, safer, stronger and more inclusive!

Will you join us in creating the positive change and contribute to 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals?

    🤔 Reflection question

What did you personally learn about the process of creating your team canvass?

    Amritpal's Answer

The process of team canvas allowed me to understand my teammates and be well aware of their strengths, weaknesses, personal goals, etc.. this has allowed me to form an image of my team members and taught me how to effectively leverage the team's individuals to complete the tasks. Furthermore, with this task, I discovered some things about myself that I was not aware of before.

    🤔 Reflection question

After completing the Mobius Strip exercise, what do you feel are next steps towards contributing to the community you care about?

    Amritpal's Answer

The Mobius strip activity helped me realize that the individual and community are mirror images of each other. To design a changemaker pathway that drives transformative social innovation, it has to be done collaboratively i.e. ME=WE. I think the next step should be conducting interviews with community people and getting insights into their experiences and other to do that successfully we need to empathize with them to truly understand the situation.

    🤔 Reflection question

After completing CTN, what new awareness do you have for yourself (ME) and your community (WE) and what is one action you might take to continue to explore it?

    Victoria's Answer

After completing CTN, I have learned so much about myself and what i am capable of. Before starting CTN I was a shy person who did not want to share ideas because of the fear I would be judged. After working through a whole two semesters in CTN I have learned that I should have never had that fear. because I have some great ideas that people need to hear about. Of course I would never have been able to realize this by myself, I had a great group that supported me through it. They would push me to share ideas, communicate more, and to be more open with them. I realize that if you have the right group of people, teamwork can be such so rewarding and important to others and yourself. A new awareness I have for my community is that people need to share there concerns and voices and people need to listen to others. If we all listened to one another we would have more world peace. It also would help create more bond between one another. One action that I want to keep working on is advocating for myself. As shy as I am I need to be able to stand up for myself because if I do not it is only going to hurt myself.

    🤔 Reflection question

What did you learn about publicly sharing your ideas that you will carry with you in your future of work?

    Victoria's Answer

When sharing your idea publicly it can be scary and uncomfortable for people. I always had problems with sharing my ideas because I was scared people may judge me or making fun of the ideas I had. I learned throughout this semester that I was wrong about that. During this semester I had a group of students that I was working with that were the kindest people I met and all my fears had gone away. By the end of the semester I was sharing my ideas and I did not care if someone judged me. I learned that it is more important to show people what you are capable of then not saying anything at all because in the end its only going to hurt yourself. I also learned to not care about what people think about you. People will be mean no matter what so you should not be afraid to make mistakes because t is a learning opportunity. I will be taking these lessons with me into my future work because I know that I will be making a difference in myself.

    🤔 Reflection question

How might the prototype & test stage help you with overcoming a fear of failure or challenging your assumptions about what is ‘right’?

    Victoria's Answer

The prototype & test stage is a great stage that you need to go through which will relieve any fears you may have with failure or challenges. The prototype & test stage is a step where you can build your product and test it out. By having this stage it helps you realize that there might be something you want to add or take away from the product you are trying to produce. It also helps people truly see what there final product might look like.

    🤔 Reflection question

How might ideation help you develop your active listening skills to brainstorm and reflect on ideas effectively with your team?

    Victoria's Answer

Ideation is where you use teamwork, brainstorming, and divergent thinking in a group setting to help bring forward new ideas. By using ideation within your group it can be beneficial for all members in the group. It will also help the group as a whole if everyone is using ideation. By having the whole team think this way, you will be able to have stronger active listening skills because you are all using teamwork skills and divergent thinking which will help create a better final result.

    🤔 Reflection question

How might you explain the value of you having a systems-thinking mindset when attempting to define and understand a complex problem?

    Victoria's Answer

Systems-thinking mindset is important when attempting to define and understand a complex problem because when you are trying to understand a problem you want to look at the system as a whole instead of individual pieces. When looking at the problem as a whole you will be able to see things that you might not be able to see when looking at certain parts of the problem.

    🤔 Reflection question

What did you personally learn about the process of creating your team canvass?

    Kevin's Answer

It has been quite helpful to examine mine and my team mates perspectives on people's responsibilities, shared objectives, values, and personal aspirations as well as to perform a SWOT analysis. It makes roles clearer, promotes teamwork, and relates individual goals to the group's mission. Having a shared understanding of values encourages productive teamwork, and the SWOT analysis improves decision-making. These procedures enable our team to collect valuable insights among ourselves. PS also working on a Jam board online is also pretty cool 😎

The Mobius Strip activity helped me identify and connect my strengths, problems, and attributes with myself and the community.
