Systems-thinking mindset is important when attempting to define and understand a complex problem because when you are trying to understand a problem you want to look at the system as a whole instead of individual pieces. When looking at the problem as a whole you will be able to see things that you might not be able to see when looking at certain parts of the problem.

Adopting a systems-thinking approach can be a very useful technique when describing or understanding a complex subject. This technique explores how one element interacts with and influences the others by approaching the problem as a system rather than a collection of discrete elements. Consequently, by understanding the connections and interconnected relationships between the many parts of the system, one can pinpoint the primary reasons of a problem and develop more efficient remedies. Furthermore, systems thinking enables people to foresee probable unintended repercussions of a suggested solution and make decisions that are well-informed and long-term in nature. In the end, adopting a systems-thinking perspective offers a more comprehensive and integrated approach to solving complex issues, leading to more effective and efficient solutions.

A systems-thinking mindset is super important when looking at complex issues within the community because there are many different sides and perspectives to the problem. This mindset allows us to look at issues and how they affect and are affected by those within a community. Looking at how a problem lives and thrives in the community will help us understand why it is there and what it really is. Often problems contribute and cause other problems, and maybe those problems share the same cause. By solving one root issue we can hope to create a positive domino effect to many problems. That is why systems-thinking mindset is so important during the define stage.
